Comprehensive exam

The comprehensive examination is a course independent exam taken by all M.S., and Ph.D. graduate students in mathematics covering the material commonly found in first-year graduate courses in analysis, algebra, and topology. It is a written examination consisting of two parts: one part covering analysis and topology and one part covering abstract and linear algebra. For master’s degree students, the examination is normally taken in the second year of study and serves as the master’s degree final examination as required by the Graduate School. For Ph.D. students, the examination serves as a qualifying examination for continued study toward the Ph.D. degree. A Ph.D. student is encouraged to take the comprehensive exam as early in his or her academic career as feasible, but no later then the fourth semester of study, except by special permission of the Director of Graduate Studies.
